Both my wife (a registered nurse) and I tried using this as specified in the directions, and it consistently gives LOW readings. My son's temperature was 101 (according to two other thermometers used several times) and this said several times it was only 96. Get the Exergen Comfort Scanner for $10 more instead, it is what our pediatrician uses and actually works.

DANGEROUSLY USELESS! Dec 09, 2009
By Mutts202 I have had this thermometer for a year, and have relied on it to tell me if my 1-2 year old had a fever whenever she felt warm. It never registered anything unusually high, and I figured for the higher price, it should be pretty reliable.
It wasn't until just recently, when my 2 year old daughter had a 103 fever, that I discovered that this thermometer is terribly inaccurate. Repeatedly, it would report that her temperature is 97,98,99, when a rectal thermometer, color changing strip, and just the touch of my hand would tell me her temp was really 103. I tried it on myself, and it said I was the same temperature as her! I tried it in multiple locations on both our temples, and the battery level is fine, but it still gives terribly inaccurate readings.
Save yourself trouble and try a different brand or method.

By Laura J. McManamy This thermometer is anything but accurate. I take my son's temperature with it and it reads 97.7 the first time and then 99.9 10 minutes later. It does not do what you need it for and is so unreliable I can't trust the readings. This is especially bad given the cost. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Disregard Three Stars - It's a Waste of Money Jun 23, 2008
By Kate Ball I first rated this item about a month ago after three or four uses. I pulled it out today for the first time since then, and it was dead. I tried replacing the battery, and nothing happened.
I can't update the number of stars provided, but it I were to rate it again today, I would give it one.
